USNIC to Testify at U.S. House Hearing on Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act

April 20, 2017

Washington DC -- The Chair of the US Nuclear Infrastructure Council's Backend Working Group, Steven Nesbit, will present industry's views on the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 at a US House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday, April 26. Mr. Nesbit is Director of Nuclear Policy and Support for Duke Energy Corporation.

The USNIC Backend Working Group issued a Charting a Path Forward Issue Brief in March 2017, which called for urgent action by the Congress, the Trump Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under Energy Secretary Rick Perry to re-establish the basic foundational elements of a comprehensive program for used nuclear fuel and high-level waste storage and disposal.

The House Subcommittee on Environment hearing will focus on the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017 discussion draft,  which advances "practical reforms" to the Nation's nuclear waste management policy to ensure the federal government meets its obligations to dispose of used nuclear fuel and high-level waste.

The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. It will also be webcast:  https://energycommerce.house.gov/
